From Istanbul to Northern Aegean: A 4-Day Road Trip
Embark on a delightful road trip from Istanbul to the serene pace of Northern Aegean. Along this route filled with sea, mountains, and history, savor unforgettable tastes and create lasting memories.
Day 1: Witnessing History & Welcome to the Foothills of Mount Ida
Route: Istanbul -> 1915 Çanakkale Bridge -> Troy -> Adatepe / Yeşilyurt Villages (Küçükkuyu)
Driving Time: Approx. 4 – 4.5 hours
We set off early in the morning, crossing continents via the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge into the cool breeze of the Aegean.
First Stop: Ancient City of Troy and the Troy Museum
Heading south from Çanakkale, our first stop is the Ancient City of Troy, home to legendary tales spanning thousands of years. The award-winning Troy Museum vividly showcases the region's rich history through a modern lens. Walking among the ancient ruins, you will catch the distant whispers of mythology.
Afternoon: Adatepe and Yeşilyurt Villages (Küçükkuyu)
Before immersing ourselves in the oxygen-rich air of Mount Ida (Kazdağları), we reach Adatepe or Yeşilyurt villages, where you can admire some of the finest examples of traditional stone architecture. Tucked away among pine and olive trees, these villages feel like places where time has stood still.

Day 2: Facing the Sea in the Birthplace of Philosophy
Route: Küçükkuyu -> Assos (Behramkale) -> Kadırga Bay
Driving Time: Approx. 1 hour
After fueling up with the crisp mountain air of Kazdağları and a lavish North Aegean breakfast, we turn the wheel south toward the deep blue sea.
Morning: Ancient City of Assos & Temple of Athena
Assos (Behramkale), where Aristotle once established a philosophy school, is one of the most captivating ancient settlements in the region. Ascending to the Temple of Athena at the summit to take in the breathtaking panorama of the Gulf of Edremit and Lesbos Island is an absolute must-do ritual on this route. Don't forget to wander down the stone path leading to the Ancient Harbor and absorb the historic atmosphere.
Afternoon: Unwinding at Kadırga Bay
After exploring the ancient ruins, it's time for a refreshing swim! Located right next to Assos, Kadırga Bay is renowned for its Blue Flag status and crystal-clear, cool waters.

Leaving Kazdağları and Assos behind, we journey toward Ayvalık, the capital of olive oil. Framed by pine forests and sweeping coastal views, this leg of the drive is immensely scenic.
Morning: Streets of Ayvalık & Şeytan Sofrası (Devil's Feast)
Upon reaching central Ayvalık, take a photo walk among the Neoclassical Greek-style stone houses. Pause at Macaron Street for a refreshing glass of unripe grape juice (koruk suyu) or mastic-infused Turkish coffee. In the late afternoon, make your way up to Şeytan Sofrası to watch a legendary sunset that paints the surrounding islands and sea in deep crimson hues.
Afternoon: Crossing to Cunda
We cross over to Cunda (Alibey) Island via Turkey’s first bridge over a strait. With its historic stone cafes, vibrant shuttered houses, and the Rahmi M. Koç Museum (Taksiyarhis Church), Cunda is a cultural destination in its own right.

Alternative 1: A Final Touch of History (Pergamon / Bergama)
If you are a history enthusiast, continue south from Ayvalık to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pergamon (Bergama). The ancient theater built on steep slopes and the remnants of the Altar of Zeus will leave you spellbound. From there, you can connect to the Izmir Highway for your return trip to Istanbul.
Alternative 2: Island Breeze (Bozcaada Detour)
If you aren't ready to let go of the North Aegean spirit, head to Geyikli Pier on your way back and catch a ferry to Bozcaada. Lush vineyards, the cool waters of Ayazma Beach, and a sunset by the Windmills will serve as an unforgettable grand finale to your journey. (If your trip coincides with the Bozcaada Jazz Festival or the grape harvest season, this option is highly recommended!)
